Come join us on Zoom for our first National Mindfulness Discussion. Mindfulness Council of Canada (MCC) is a newly formed Not-for-Profit nationwide networking organization committed to finding and promoting reputable mindfulness trainings and programs for personal, professional, or corporate development. We are committed to actively promoting collaboration, innovation, networking and advocacy within the mindfulness community across Canada.

The three speakers being interviewed are the following:    

Dee Jenkins (They/Them),

Omushkego-Anishinaabe,

Two-Spirit Knowledge Keeper, and Storyteller,

Dee lives by and shares the teachings imparted

by the Elders, Teachers, and Guides

Dee Jenkins began their journey as a dedicated federal public servant 22 years ago, working in the areas of Indigenous governance and administration, Indigenous economic development, Indigenous community housing, and infrastructure, and Indigenous education, social development and partnerships.

Dee also served as a faculty member at Confederation College in Thunder Bay, Ontario as a Professor of Indigenous Policy and Indigenous Governance. Born and raised in North Bay Ontario (Robinson-Huron Treaty), Dee’s ancestral lands include Treaty 1, 3, and 5, and is matrilineally connected to York Landing First Nation in Northern Manitoba (Swampy Cree).

Over the past 30 Years, Dee has been mentored by Elders, Wisdom Keepers and Spiritual Advisors from the Anishinaabe, Omushkego, Haudenosaunee, Tuscarora and Métis Nations. As a Two-Spirit Knowledge Keeper, and Storyteller, Dee lives by and shares the teachings imparted by their Elders, Teachers, and Guides.

Michael Yellow Bird, MSW, PhD

Dean and Professor,

Faculty of Social Work,

University of Manitoba

Michael Yellow Bird, MSW, PhD, is Dean and Professor of the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Manitoba. Michael Yellow Bird. He is an enrolled member of the MHA Nation (Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara) in North Dakota, USA.

Dr. Yellow Bird is a member of the International Mindfulness Teachers Association and is a certified mindfulness teacher, professional, and has been practicing mindfulness meditation and Indigenous contemplative practices for more than 47 years. He has held faculty appointments at the University of British Columbia, University of Kansas, Arizona State University, Humboldt State University, and North Dakota State University.

His research focuses on the effects of colonization and methods of decolonization, healthy Indigenous peoples’ aging, Arikara ethnobotany and traditional agriculture, Indigenous mindfulness and neurodecolonization, and the cultural significance of Rez dog.

Sarah Kinsley, (She/her/hers)

BA, BEd., MEd.

Sarah Kinsley, (she/her/hers) is a psychotherapist, facilitator, consultant, and learner, and is grateful to live and learn on Turtle Island, home to many nations who continue to steward the land, air, and water. She has a passion for generating Land Acknowledgments which are not just participatory but are a form of particip-action and has done so for the AMM-MIND program at University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies.

She is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC) and holds a MEd in Counselling from the University of Victoria, a BEd in Education from Queen’s University and a BA (Hons) in Indigenous Studies from Trent University. She is a Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner (SETM).

Currently, Sarah teaches in Mindfulness-based programs at The University of Toronto. She accompanies people in individual counselling through First Nations Health Authority and in private practice. Sarah co-facilitates a 100-hour Yoga Teacher Training: Trauma Informed Practice: on and off the mat.

Sarah shares Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and is a graduate of the two-year Community Meditation Teacher training through Truth North Insight. She is a registered Yoga teacher for adults and children (E-RYT 500, RCYT).

Previously, she was primary school educator and the key instructor and co-coordinator for the graduate certificate in Mindfulness-Based Teaching and Learning (MBTL) at The University of the Fraser Valley She also helped develop and facilitated the Integrated Mindfulness Certificate at Royal Roads University (RRU) for years.
